Pranakhon Thai: Reviews & Ratings
At Pranakhon, you can taste and experience various foods, inspired from outdoor alley (soi) of Thailand. After my friends and I had dined here for a birthday celebration, we can see how they earned Michelin Stars for three years! For starters, we ordered Klui Goong and Gai Manow. The Klui Goong was light, crispy, and the combination of pork and seafood was delicious. The sauce added a nice sweet-sour taste too. We also ordered various entrée such as Khao Soi Haeng, Khao Na Ped, Kang Dang Moo, Moo Grob Prik Khing, and Ped Ruan. The Kang Dang Moo was creamy with the coconut milk and fragrant with the basil leaf. Luckily, it was not too sweet, although I would prefer it a little bit spicier. The highlight of the night was definitely the Moo Grob Prik Khing, stir-fried crispy pork with string beans, kaffir lime, and chili paste! The pork had a nice crisp crunch. It was perfectly cooked so it was not too tender and not too crispy. The seasoning made the crispy pork flavor burst and it was a delight to share amongst the table!
There were so many options it was hard to choose. We got the pad thai and mussaman short ribs. Both were delicious. The short ribs were very tender with a nice sauce. The pad thai was also really tasty and had a fun presentation. Although, it was not the best pad thai I have ever had. Looking around at other tables’ orders, the presentation of many dishes looked really good. For a popular place, the restaurant was huge and had plenty of seating, so there was hardly any wait time during a busy hour.
Everything was delicious and fresh. Absolutely phenomenal, every item. The fish came out under heat and the sauce to die for. Beau P was our server she was the sweetest person ever! She gave us some recommendations like the Curry pancake, and we loved it! We will definitely be back.
We reached the place 15 minutes earlier than our reservation time and had a short wait. The ambience was on point. They tried to replicate a little street food vibe but still keep it a little classy. Place was a little loud with it being completely packed and also the tables are placed a little too close. We enjoyed our time here. We ordered the curry pancake to start our meal with. It was a little bland for our taste but still tasted pretty good. And then we went with the Pad Thai, Green curry with chicken which tasted amazing. Prices are a little on the pricier side but expected for a NYC restaurant. We ordered some mocktails as well which tasted amazing too. Would definitely visit again to try the other items on the menu. Staff were very courteous and accommodating when we were trying to make some customizations to our food
Rated as one of the top Thai spots in NYC and a recent Michael Bib Gourmand, this restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy some great Thai food. I would recommend booking a reservation here ahead of time (by a week, especially for weekends) as it gets very busy. The interior is spacious with lots of tables and beautiful decor reminiscent of Thailand's streets. We ordered their papaya salad, shrimp egg rolls, and curry pancake for appetizers. For mains, we got their braised beef, soft shell crab curry, tom kha, and crab fried rice. Portions here were so generous and everything was delicious. My favorites were the braised beef and the soft shell crab curry as they were so rich, creamy, and flavorful and paired really well with rice. The crab fried rice was another favorite at our table. Service here is very attentive, but I did notice that they REALLY tried to upsell us on everything. We definitely were recommended more dishes than we needed (we didn't even order as much as our waitress recommended) and for dessert, half of our table didn't want dessert so we told our waitress we wanted something small. She recommended four orders of the coconut pudding, but did not tell us that each serving already came with FOUR bowls. Had we known, we would've only ordered one.
Highly recommended! The fish dishes are must-try. Crab rice was good! Service was amazing (and definitely looking for their recommendations if you have never been there before). Sundae was made of corn, peach and sticky rice with coconut ice cream. Big bite would be enjoyed. Great treat if you walked whole day. Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee are both good for spicy foods while I do see many people who come here often order cocktails (from I have observed) Also I usually do not enjoy sitting on the bar and this time I would say the people who serve on the bar make this experience great!
So good. All the food hit. Not too oily or salty, but strong flavors and good spice. Underrated starters were the curry pancakes. They had an Indian profile and the sweet sauce on the side paired so well either way it. Khao soi was a dry dish which was interesting. Steak was cooked to perfection. Service was fantastic. Server came up periodically to refill in the water. She was present but never pushy despite the long line of people waiting for weekend dinner. Interior vibes are cool and take me to Thailand.
Pranakhon is one of my favourite Thai restaurants in the city. The atmosphere is always very lively, and they have such a wide variety of authentic dishes that I'm always very impressed by. I often order one of their rice dishes, and they are all so delicious. My favourite is the kaprow moo sub, which comes at a very (authentic) level of spiciness; I also liked the pad krapow and khao moo dang -- pork is always so juicy and tender (crispy pork belly so flavourful). The mee kati was a pleasant surprise when I tried it -- I liked how the flavour of the fresh mangos paired with the tamarind flavour of the noodles / sauce. It was a bit heavy, and some of the noodles started to clump together. For a less spicy option, I really enjoyed the preaw wan. The sweet and sour flavour was a refreshing contrast from the richer flavours of other dishes like the curries, and I liked the eclectic mix of pineapples, tomatoes, nuts, onions, etc. Made for a very interesting overall dish. While the menu is a little pricey, the lunch special is quite worth it if you're able to come for a weekday lunch. I am a big fan of the Pranakhon salad (which comes as a side for the lunch combo) -- the mango ginger dressing is so delicious and the shredded mango is always SO fresh. Always very keen to come back to try something else off their menu. They can get a bit busy at peak times, so definitely try to make a reservation in advance.
